So yeah, I forgot to post this earlier.
About 3 weeks ago I was going to fix a leaky valve cover gasket on the Jeep, and it should have been a 20 minute, maybe 30 at most, job.
Little did I know it would turn into a 4 day ordeal! What lurked beneath the valve cover is proof positive, that changing your engine oil on a regular basis WILL IN FACT PROLONG the life of your cars engine!
I’m amazed at the people who will purchase a $25,000 or $30,000 dollar car or truck, and then bitch about a 20 dollar oil change! I’m not sure if the previous owner had the oil changed at all, it sure didn’t look like it!
This engine would not have lasted much longer if I had not decided to fix the valve cover oil leak, which by the way, the sludge build up, may have been the cause of the leak!
And for the peeps that say, “Why didn’t you change your oil more often?” I do. I just recently purchased this Jeep, and I’m in the process of doing regular maintenance on it and fixing things that should have been fixed long ago!
I spent the better of two days using a shop vac and small picks and screw drivers to remove the baked on oil. I finally ended up removing the push rods and rocker arms to get it clean. I used engine degreasers and diesel fuel. I removed the oil pan from the bottom and cleaned all that stuff too. I’m sure the Jeep is thanking me for the effort.
So after a long 4 days of cleaning, getting everything as clean as I can, I put new gaskets on. I installed a new oil filter, and buttoned up everything tight. I filled her with oil and started her up. She purred like a kitten! I collectively added another 200,000 miles to this Jeep’s life. Proper maintenance will see to that!
Here are a some pics of the mess.
Oh yeah, most of these images were captured with the new iPhone 4S. This camera rocks!
